Celsius described inflammation in the 1st century A.D. and was the first to pinpoint the four main signs which characterize inflammation: redness, swelling with heat and pain.
In the 3rd century A.D., Galen re-elaborated these conditions and defined inflammation as a reaction of the body to injury.
A similar view was backed in the 18th century, at the dawn of modern medicine, by an English doctor, John Hunter.
